Cross pein hammers are also known as machinist’s hammers, engineer’s hammers or mechanics hammer and are 'peening hammers' that are commonly used in metalworking. Peening is the process of hardening a surface by impact. The head of the hammer has a flat face for striking punches and cold chisels and a hemispherical 'peening' or ball face. The ball face is used for rounding off the edges of metal pins and fastenings, closing rivets and shaping and bending metal.
