The IP rating refers to the level of protection that is provided, with lower numbers offering minimal protection and higher numbers offering maximum protection. The first digit refers to the level of protection from solids such as dust and debris, whereas the second digit refers to liquid.

The IK rating refers to the level of protection is offered from external physical and mechanical impacts. For example, an IK02 rating offers protection from approximately 0.25kg dropped from 80 mm, whereas IK10 offers approximately 5kg dropped from 400 mm above the surface.
