Silicon Capacitors

Silicon capacitors are a type of capacitor which have a silicon based dielectric (insulation material) and due to their great operating frequency range they are ideal for high speed circuits in harsh environment applications.

Capacitors are widely used as parts of electrical circuits in many electrical devices for storing electric charge, delaying voltage changes and filtering out unwanted signals.The type of dielectric material used is one of the main features that determine the applications of a capacitor as well as packaging and the structure of the plates.

Capacitors with silicon dielectrics can be used in areas that require high stability, reliability and tolerance to high temperatures.

Silicon capacitors features include:

  • Three-layer design - consists of a conductor (metal), dielectric (insulator) and conductor (silicon)
  • Wide operation temperature range
  • Good stability - their capacitance does not alter when they are exposed to heat or high voltages
  • Low ESR (equivalent series resistance)
  • Low leakage current
  • High insulation resistance
  • High capacitance density
  • Small in size - ideally for miniaturised work

Components of silicon capacitors

You can choose from a range of shapes and sizes, but capacitors all usually have the same basic components. There are two conductors and the insulator in between them (called the dielectric). Silicon capacitors can come as surface mount (SMD) which means they can be mounted to a PCB (printed circuit board)
