    Pneumatic Rotary Actuators

Pneumatic rotary actuators are types of devices that are operated by compressed air that produces a rotary motion via a shaft to control the speed and rotation of attached equipment.

An actuator receives and converts a source of energy and uses it to make something move or operate. Actuator types can be linear or rotary, meaning it cam move something in a circular spinning motion. When purchasing a rotary actuator things to considered include rotation angle, how much air is required for the task,  materials and interface.

    Types of pneumatic rotary actuators:

Both designs are available as double action (air is supplied to both sides of the piston) or single action (air supplied to only one side).

    • Rack and pinion rotary actuators - this type of actuator has a better range of rotation and torque than the vane type and are usually larger in size and ideal for medium duty applications that need more speed.  They also have a longer lifespan then the vane type
    • Rotary vane actuators - these actuators are more limited in rotation than the rack types and often used for lighter loads.

How do pneumatic rotary actuators work?

Compressed air is connected into the pneumatic connection on the rotary actuator which drives a cylinder stroke into an oscillating rotary motion.

Where would you use a pneumatic rotary actuator?

These actuators are commonly used in industrial applications for conveying, clamping, transferring parts, positioning, and controlling valves and can be used in hazardous areas.
