Greases are typically used across a multitude of industries and applications where frequently applying lubrication is difficult due to inaccessibility or risk to worker safety. Greases are thicker than other lubricants and are in a semi-solid state when they are initially placed on a surface, but, as they heat up, they become more viscous and provide lubrication for moving parts. What are greases made from?

There are different types of greases in order to ensure suitability for a wide range of applications and to meet different industry requirements:

  • Aluminium greases are frequently used in food production machinery due to their high temperature tolerance and moisture resistance.
  • Silicone (also known as dielectric grease) is designed to be used with sensitive components, such as electronics, and protects against galvanic corrosion.
  • Synthetic grease is most commonly found lubricating rotating parts in machinery, such as bearings, due to its resistance to extreme environments and temperatures that may affect mineral-based lubricants.
  • Lithium-based greases are general purpose greases and can often be found in the home as well as in industrial settings. It isn't water resistant, but can withstand pressure and long-term use.

When would you need greases?

Greases provide lubrication for moving or rotating parts, providing protection, increasing efficiency and extending operation life. When other lubricants, such as oils, are not suitable for the environment or the materials that require lubrication, greases are used in their place. Greases keep machinery working at their optimal temperature by reducing friction and preventing components from overheating.

Greases are typically found in industrial applications that use machinery, such as manufacturing, food production, mechanical engineering, etc., where they are used in lubricating bearings, chains, and various mechanical equipment.
