    Shunts

    Electrical shunts are simply devices capable of creating low-resistant path for current. With such, current can flow to another point within the circuit. Electrical shunts can also be called Current shunt resistor (Current shunt) or ammeter shunt. Although the use of a shunt resistor is vast, there is one that is very common. For instance, it can be useful in measuring high currents alongside associated resistance that are of low levels.

    What are Shunt Resistors?

    Also known as an ammeter shunt or a current shunt resistor, a shunts low resistance creates only a small amount of voltage drop by using little energy in the process. By using Ohms Law equation, the voltage across the shunt is measured and used to calculate the current flow in amperes.

    A resistor of accurately known resistance (usually a manganin resistor) is placed in parallel with the ammeter. The current is then divided so that only a small amount travels through the ammeter and the actual amperage can be directly measured.

    There is another way of explaining a shunt to enable you understand better - it is a device which can make current pass through or diverted via low-resistance creation. Some applications or use of a shunt resistor are:

    • Measuring of current circulation. This happens when power generation is being monitored.
    • Having high frequency noise redirected.
    • Facilitating easy connection between inverters and batteries. A DC connector is where it is installed within. These are typical of DC shunts.
    • Offering ultimate protection of your devices in cases of overload.

    Types of Electrical Shunts

    There are usually different types of electrical shunts which you need to be aware of. These will be explained in form of devices for easy understanding. Check them out below.

    Murata Power Solutions Digital Shunt

    This is a common or popular type of shunt. When it comes to having DC currents measured, it can be said that this option is very ideal. It is one of those dc shunts you will come across in the market. It usually features a phenolic base that is very rugged. The insulation which it provides is around 750V. This enables it to get attached to surfaces made with metal.

    Hobut Shunt

    At this point, it is crucial to note that "Hobut” is a brand. In other words, it is the name of a company. If you are searching for how digital panel meters can be easily converted into ammeters, this is the right tool to use. It is usually referred to as ammeter shunt. Its voltage output is 200mV. Also, it has accuracy class of ±1%. Finally, it has solder pad meter connectors and current connectors M4 screw terminals.
